Companion Star's Mission
To create, produce and present breakthrough musical works and events through our
unique collaborative process that reflects the diversity of our world.
On a trip to Canada in 1997 to promote a contemporary opera by Welsh composer John Metcalf, Companion Star Executive Director, Michael Douglas Jones visited the Banff Center for the Arts. After a particularly festive evening reconnecting with the community that offered him so much support and artistic freedom, Michael noticed an unusual scene in the sky: a lone star suspended brightly between a crescent moon and one of Banff's towering mountains; a companion star to the mountain and the moon. This tableau inspired our company's name "Companion Star". and captured the essence of Michael's dream of an organization that would guide artists through exploration to produce new musical works by way of ground-breaking and honest collaborative efforts.
This work-philosophy emerges from the eighteen years of exploration and performances of new music theatre and opera in which Michael participated at the Banff Centre; known for its innovative collaborations of professional artists from around the world to develop new works of all genres. Companion Star is the next step in the evolution of Michael's work at Banff.
